Rui Zhang was born in Chongqing (China) and began to learn piano at the age of 4. She has successively studied with Prof. Dr. Ruoxu Chen, Associate Dean of the School of Music of Southwest University (Chongqing, China); Professor Katharine Lam of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (Birmingham, UK); Professor Mikhail Kazakevich of the Trinity College of Music (London, UK); Dr. Melody Quah, Assistant Professor of Pennsylvania State University (PA, USA).

In 2016, she was admitted to the School of Music of Southwest University with the first place of Piano Performance Major in Chongqing Music Joint Enrollment Examination. During 4 years at university, she was awarded first and second class scholarship, “Triple-A student” and ” Outstand Alumni Award”. In 2019, she was recommended direct admission to graduate school by Southwest University. In 2020, she entered the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (Birmingham, UK), where she studied with Prof. Katharine Lam and Mikhail Kazakevich. In 2021, she joined the Vocal Department at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire where she accompanied first-year postgraduate students in their weekly performance classes, and studied one year harpsichord with Dr. Martin Perkins, the Head of the Department of Historical Performance. After graduating with Distinction in 2022, she enrolled in the Doctor of Musical Arts (Piano) program at Pennsylvania State University, where she serves as President and Event Planner of the Music Teachers National Association at Penn State Collegiate Chapter, studying with Dr. Melody Quah. In December 2024, she completed her DMA degree.

She has participated in piano master classes many times and has been personally guided and highly appreciated by international pianists and educators, including Jerome Lowenthal, Ursula Oppens, Gerrit Zitterbart, Jan Jiracek von Arnim, Jerzy Sterczyński, etc. She has won numerous awards, including the 11th China-Singapore International Music Competition, the 5th “Xuehuibei” Sichuan Youth Piano Competition, 2024 Graduate Exhibition at Penn State, etc.  In the summer of 2019 and 2021, she was invited to participate in the Music Festival Perugia in Italy twice, performing the chamber concert with the Umbria Ensemble, and Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with conductor Gaddiel Dombrowner.

Rui’s career in accompaniment began in 2013 when she joined the choir of Chongqing No. 2 Foreign Language School. In 2014, as the primary pianist in the school’s choir, she traveled with the choir to give concerts at the Musikverein in Austria. In 2018 she formed her own chamber ensemble, the Whale Trio (clarinet, cello and piano). She has given several concerts with singers in Chongqing, England and Northern Ireland, among other places. The singers she accompanies have won awards in various major competitions, including the 17th American Classical Singer International Vocal Competition, “The Golden Stars” International Music Competition of Valencia, The 7th Peacock Cup National Vocal Performance Of Higher Art Colleges in China, etc. In July 2023, she was invited to perform Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the Chongqing Festival Orchestra at Chongqing Guotai Arts Center.
